About Bathukamma

Bathukamma is a nine-day floral festival where women create stacked flower arrangements and sing folk songs before immersing them in water, praying to Goddess Gauri for family prosperity.

Purpose

Bathukamma means "Mother Goddess, come alive" — invoking Gauri's blessings for women's health and family prosperity. The floral craft honours seasonal biodiversity; immersion returns flowers to water as an ecological ritual predating modern environmental awareness.

Each day of Bathukamma features different flower stacks — Gunuka Bathukamma, Atukula Bathukamma, and more — using seasonal blooms like tangedu, gunugu, and cassia. The festival culminates on Saddula Bathukamma with large community gatherings.

Many Telangana families also book Varalakshmi or Devi puja during Bathukamma season. The Thousand Pillar Temple in Warangal hosts one of the region's largest Bathukamma launch events.

Origins & heritage

History of Bathukamma

How this festival evolved across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Bathukamma traditions are rooted in Telangana village life where women collected wildflowers during the monsoon retreat. The festival gained state-festival status alongside Bonalu after Telangana formation.

Each day has a named Bathukamma — Engili Pula, Atukula, Muddapappu, and others — preserving agricultural calendar memory. Saddula Bathukamma on Durgashtami is the grand immersion day.

The Thousand Pillar Temple in Warangal and public grounds across Hyderabad now host government-supported Bathukamma events, blending folk practice with civic celebration.
