Nag Panchami 2026: Puja Vidhi, Mantras, and What Not to Do

Nag Panchami always falls on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Shravana, two days after Hariyali Teej. Gujarat follows the Amanta calendar, so it celebrates roughly two weeks later, just before Krishna Janmashtami.

The Naga represents cosmic energy, transformation, hidden knowledge, and guardianship. Nagas are believed to be children of sage Kashyapa, rulers of Patal Lok, and stepbrothers of the gods. Lord Shiva wears a serpent as a symbol of mastery over fear and ego; Lord Vishnu rests on Sheshnag, serpent of infinite time.

Twelve principal Nag Devtas are worshipped: Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya, Takshaka, and Pingala.

The Legend of Krishna and Kaliya: Krishna subdued the poisonous serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna by dancing on his hoods, then mercifully spared him on condition he leave the river forever — a symbol of good triumphing over poison and fear.

The Legend of Janamejaya and Astika Muni: King Janamejaya performed a Sarpa Yagya to avenge his father Parikshit's death by snakebite. Sage Astika Muni, born of a Naga mother, persuaded the king to stop the yagya, saving the Naga race — the origin of Nag Panchami.

1. Wake before sunrise and take a purifying bath, ideally with Gangajal.

2. Clean and purify the puja area by sprinkling Gangajal.

3. Take a Sankalp (vow) for the vrat, stating your intention for protection and family well-being.

4. Install an image or idol of Nag Devta along with Lord Shiva.

5. Offer milk, water, and Gangajal to the idol or image (not directly into live snake burrows).

6. Offer flowers, durva grass, turmeric, kumkum, akshat, and sweets.

7. Light a diya and incense, perform aarti.

8. Chant the Nag Panchami mantras and recite the Vrat Katha.

9. Feed Brahmins or the needy, distribute prasad.

10. Break the fast in the evening with satvik, unfried food.

Universal Naga Salutation Mantra:

सर्वे नागाः प्रीयन्तां मे ये केचित् पृथ्वीतले। ये च हेलिमरीचिस्था येऽन्तरे दिवि संस्थिताः॥ ये नदीषु महानागा ये सरस्वतिगामिनः। ये च वापीतडगेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वै नमः॥

Meaning: May all serpents on earth, in the sun's rays, in heaven, in rivers, lakes, wells, and ponds be pleased with me. I bow to all of them.

Nine Nagas Protection Mantra:

अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम्। शङ्खपालं धृतराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा॥ एतानि नव नामानि नागानां च महात्मनाम्। सायङ्काले पठेन्नित्यं प्रातःकाले विशेषतः। तस्य विषभयं नास्ति सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्॥

Meaning: Reciting these nine Naga names daily, especially in the morning, protects from poison and brings victory.

Simple Everyday Chant: ॐ नागदेवताय नमः (Om Naag Devtaya Namah) — repeat 108 times with a mala.

Idol or image of Nag Devta, an image of Lord Shiva, raw milk, Gangajal, turmeric powder, kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice), flowers, durva grass, incense sticks and diya, ghee or oil, sweets (modak or kheer), and a wooden chowki.

Do not till, dig, or plough the land. Do not cut vegetables or use a knife or any blade. Do not cook or eat fried or oily food — only steamed, boiled, or satvik meals. Avoid salty food in several regional traditions. Do not harm, catch, or force a live snake for milk offerings — use idols or images instead. Do not force-feed milk to a live snake; snakes are lactose intolerant and this can seriously harm them. Do not skip the sankalp or perform the puja without intention. Avoid anger or conflict on this day.

Maharashtra & Karnataka: Naga Bandhan, a sacred thread tied around the home for protection. Bengal & Odisha: snake symbols drawn with turmeric and kumkum. South India: married women visit parental homes, worship at anthills, bless brothers with milk-dipped flowers. Shirale, Maharashtra: traditionally known for live snake worship, now shifting to idol-based alternatives. Nepal: Nag Devta images placed at doorways. Gujarat: celebrated as Nag Pancham, 15 days later, before Janmashtami, preceded by Bahula Chauth (Bol Choth).

Nag Panchami is considered especially significant for those with Kaal Sarp Dosh or Sarpa Dosha, and for those going through difficult Rahu-Ketu transits. Worshipping the Nag Devta is believed to reduce these afflictions, remove obstacles, and support meditation and Kundalini awakening.
